The following activity is a practice exercise to help you measure your success under timed conditions.

If you are unsure of an answer move on to the next question.  You should come back to questions you found difficult at the end if you have time.

We need to find the same missing letter for four words.

cro (__) int

tra (__) our

We need to check that the same option works in the first and second set.

The missing letter is p, giving us:

cro (p) int

tra (p) our

Now it's time to begin this practice exercise.  Good luck!

  • Question 1

Find the missing letter to complete all four words.

Cape (_) pare

Sit (_) lots

CORRECT ANSWER
s
EDDIE SAYS
The missing letter was s. This makes the words capes, spare, sits and slots. Find a letter that completes the first word and see if this letter then works for the other three words. Use the choice of letters to help.
  • Question 2

Find the missing letter.

Pat (_) ero

Grap (_) ail

CORRECT ANSWER
h
EDDIE SAYS
Now this was a challenge! The missing letter was h, and this completely changed the pronunciation of the words that we could see. It helps to visualise the word as you add a letter onto it so that you can see the full word. This helps you decide if it\'s a real word or not The letter h made the words path, hero, graph and hail.
  • Question 3

Find the missing letter.

Gras (_) ell

Bas (_) lime

CORRECT ANSWER
s
EDDIE SAYS
Did you spot the missing letter here? It was s. This may have caught you out, as it made two of the words have a double s. This makes the words grass, sell, bass and slime. Is everybody still obsessed with slime? Bass is the name for an instrument, like a guitar, that has a very low sound. Bass is also the name for a fish. These words are spelled the same but sound different, so we call them homonyms. Homonyms come up in another type of verbal reasoning question, so lucky you! You\'ve had a sneak peek.
  • Question 4

Find the missing letter.

Paste (_) ean

Cora (_) obster

CORRECT ANSWER
l
EDDIE SAYS
Did you spot the missing letter l? This made the words pastel, lean, coral and lobster. The word lean can also describe a thin person or animal without any fat.
  • Question 5

Find the missing letter.

Dive (_) each

Lose (_) est

CORRECT ANSWER
r
EDDIE SAYS
The missing letter was r! This made the words diver, reach, loser and rest. Remember to try out each option until you find one that works for all four words. Keep up the hard work, letter detective!
  • Question 6

Find the missing letter and type it in below.

Toot (_) alo

Winc (_) ero

CORRECT ANSWER
h
EDDIE SAYS
This was a challenge, as we didn\'t give you any letters to choose from. The missing letter was h! A h often follows the letters s and c, so look out for this in the future. The letter h makes the words tooth, halo, winch and hero. Winch means to hoist or haul something up.
  • Question 7

Find the missing letter and type it in below.

Was (_) ale

Lam (_) each

CORRECT ANSWER
p
EDDIE SAYS
Did you spot the missing letter p? This makes the words wasp, pale, lamp and peach. If the missing letter doesn\'t stand out to you, focus on one word and work your way through the alphabet to see what is missing. Then try this letter out with the other words.
  • Question 8

Find the missing letter and type it in below.

Stic (_) nit

Rin (_) nife

CORRECT ANSWER
k
EDDIE SAYS
Now, this was a challenge as our missing letter k was a silent letter in two of the words. How sneaky of me! The letter k makes the words stick, knit, rink and knife. A rink is the area that you can ice skate on. Silent k shows how important it is to visualise the words in your head so that you can see what they would look like with letters added, rather than just how they would SOUND. Sometimes the letters are silent.
  • Question 9

Find the missing letter and type it in below.

Plane (_) act

Mas (_) each

CORRECT ANSWER
t
EDDIE SAYS
Did you spot the missing letter t? This makes the words planet, tact, mast and teach. If you do something with tact, you are sensitive and thoughtful in the way you do it. That means you are TACTFUL.
  • Question 10

Find the missing letter and type it in below.

Stor (_) ell

Man (_) our

CORRECT ANSWER
y
EDDIE SAYS
Did you spot the missing letter y? This makes the words story, yell, many and your. Again, try and visualise the words and add letters to them in your head.
