The following activity is a practice exercise to help you measure your success under timed conditions.

If you are unsure of an answer move on to the next question.  You should come back to questions you found difficult at the end, if you have time.

In the following set of words, two of the words do not relate to the other three. Which are the two odd words out?

Rose   Tulip    Pink   Daffodil    Grass

The odd words are pink and grass.

This is because rose, tulip and daffodil are all types of flower.

  • Question 1

Can you find the two words below that do not belong in the group?  Remember you need to look for a relationship between the words.

CORRECT ANSWER
Television
Video
EDDIE SAYS
So these words at first seem similar, don't they super spotter? They are all ways of transmitting information. However, what we need to focus on is the way in which they do this. Radio, podcast and audio refer to sound being transmitted. Video and television are the odd words out because they refer to visual images.
  • Question 2

Same again, super spotter!  You're looking for the two words in the group below that should not be there.

CORRECT ANSWER
Volcanic
Mountain
EDDIE SAYS
Again these words would all appear in the same environment. Three of the words are all types of rock, so this means that volcano and mountain do not belong in the group!
  • Question 3

Select the TWO words that do not belong in the list below.

CORRECT ANSWER
Spain
Greece
EDDIE SAYS
Did you spot the difference here super spotter? Spain and Greece are the odd words out as the other words are all capital cities, and these are the names of countries.
  • Question 4

Which two words should not be in the group below?  Think about the similarities between the words super spotter.

CORRECT ANSWER
Heat
Lunge
EDDIE SAYS
Watch out for words that are a similar spelling to words that could belong. At a glance you might think that heat is heart and lunge is lungs. However they were there to trick you. Heat and lunge are the odd words out.
  • Question 5

Which two words below do not belong to the group super spotter?

CORRECT ANSWER
Gazelle
Antelope
EDDIE SAYS
Tiger, Leopard and Cheetah go together as types of wild cats leaving Gazelle and Antelope (their prey) as the odd ones out.
  • Question 6

You know the drill now super spotter.  Can you find the two odd words out?

CORRECT ANSWER
Mediate
Angry
EDDIE SAYS
You needed your numeracy hat on for this one super spotter. Angry and mediate don't belong here. Mean, mode and median are mathematical terms for working out the average. Have you covered this year in class?
  • Question 7

Select the two words from below that do not belong in the group.  Think carefully about the relationships between the words.

CORRECT ANSWER
English
Art
EDDIE SAYS
This one was a bit tricky, wasn't it? All of the words are subjects that you might study in school. However, biology, chemistry and physics go together as the sciences. Therefore art and English, which are known as 'The Arts' are the odd words out.
  • Question 8

Highlight the TWO words that do not belong

CORRECT ANSWER
Button
Grey
EDDIE SAYS
This one was not immediately obvious. It's important to know what the roles of words are in sentences. Teach, give and pray are all verbs. Did you spot this? Button is a noun and grey is an adjective so these are the odd ones out.
  • Question 9

Select the TWO words that do not belong in the list below.

CORRECT ANSWER
Happy
Rich
EDDIE SAYS
Another tricky one! Did you look at the way you would say these words? If you say them out loud you may spot that played, fought and gave are the past tense of verbs. This makes happy and rich the odd ones out.
  • Question 10

Last one, super spotter.  Let's finish on a good one.  You know what we need to do, it's time to find those last two remaining words that are in the wrong place!

CORRECT ANSWER
Leader
Place
EDDIE SAYS
How did you do? Leader and place are the odd words out. Ruler, protractor and compass can be grouped as mathematical equipment. Activity completed super spotter!
