The following activity is a practice exercise to help you measure your success under timed conditions.

If you are unsure of an answer move on to the next question.  You should come back to questions you found difficult at the end if you have time.

In the following set of words, two of the words do not relate to the other three. Which are the two odd words out?

Rose   Tulip    Pink   Daffodil    Grass

The odd words are pink and grass.

  • Question 1

Here's a challenge for you super spotter.  Highlight the TWO words that do not belong in the group below.

CORRECT ANSWER
Knock
Hit
EDDIE SAYS
Have you heard of kindle before? It means to set fire to something. So, that should help you to work this out. Kindle links well with flame and match. SO knock and hit are the words that do not make sense in this context.
  • Question 2

Have a look at this next group.  Can you spot two words below that shouldn't be in the group, think about common themes between the words.

CORRECT ANSWER
Easel
Mantle
EDDIE SAYS
This one was quite tricky wasn't it super spotter. The relationship between three of the words is that futon, hammock and cradle are all things that can be slept in. This makes mantle and easel the odd ones out! If you are not sure of words, remember to look them up in the dictionary.
  • Question 3

Have a look at the list of the words below.  Can you select the words that do not belong super spotter?

CORRECT ANSWER
Buckle
Anorak
EDDIE SAYS
Bonnet, cap and crown can all be worn on the head so buckle and anorak are the words left out. Did you get this?
  • Question 4

You know what to do... we're looking for the words that do not belong in the group.  Can you find them?

CORRECT ANSWER
Calm
Waves
EDDIE SAYS
How did you get on here? Did you spot that a barracuda, clam and squid are all ocean dwelling creatures so form the main group. Calm and waves are the words that do not belong here!
  • Question 5

There are two words below that should not be in this group, can you spot them?

CORRECT ANSWER
Scotland
Kindred
EDDIE SAYS
How did you do? Some of these words are less common but clan, kin and relation are all terms used to describe family. So we should have kindred and Scotland as our leftover words!
  • Question 6

Ready super spotter?  You need to be on your toes for this next one!  Which are the two words that shouldn't be in the group below.

CORRECT ANSWER
Hive
Honey
EDDIE SAYS
Did you get our sneaky clue? Jive, foxtrot and ballet are all forms of dance so they group nicely together. Hive and honey also go together but they are missing a third word in their group, so they are the odd ones out!
  • Question 7

Here's another.  Two words don't belong as they don't share the same relationships.  Can you pick out the two words that should not be here?

CORRECT ANSWER
Career
Future
EDDIE SAYS
This was a challenging one wasn't it super spotter! Lawyer, concierge and composer are all names of occupations that a person could have. There is a very loose link to career and future but this is not strong enough, therefore, they have to go!
  • Question 8

Spot the two words below that should not be in this group.

CORRECT ANSWER
Cuba
Belize
EDDIE SAYS
This was another tricky one. On the surface all of these words are countries, so the link must be something else! When we think about where these countries are in the world we could be on to something. Cuba and Belize are in Central America, whereas, Finland, Sweden and Norway are in Scandinavia in Northern Europe.
  • Question 9

Find the words in the list below that should not be there.  Think about the strongest links between the words super spotter.

CORRECT ANSWER
Toast
Pasta
EDDIE SAYS
How did you do? The relationship between all of the words is that they are types of food, however, when we look more closely we find that meringue, trifle and marshmallow are sweet foods, while the others would be described as savoury.
  • Question 10

Last question super spotter.  Which of the words in the list below should not be in this group?

CORRECT ANSWER
Skies
Flowing
EDDIE SAYS
There are some good words here, right super spotter? Skies and flowing do not belong in this group. Euphoric, gleeful and jubilant, these are all words that mean feelings of happiness! When was the last time your mood could be described as euphoric? Try to use these words in a sentence this week.
