  • Question 1

Tick the word that goes with the picture.

snail

CORRECT ANSWER
snail
EDDIE SAYS
How did you get on? The trick is to remember that the 'ai' digraph makes the long 'a' sound. Both the letters 'a' and 'i' team up to make the long 'a' sound. This is different to the sound we hear in the word 'p-a-t'. The long 'a' sound makes the letter say it's name, like if it was a capital 'A'. Try the next question.
  • Question 2

Tick the word that goes with the picture.

bag of grain

CORRECT ANSWER
grain
EDDIE SAYS
Did you pick the correct one? Remember 'ai' are a team. They are two letters that have come together to make the 'ai' sound. A good hint is that the 'ai' digraph are normally seen in the middle of a word.
  • Question 3

Tick the word that goes with the picture.

tail

CORRECT ANSWER
tail
EDDIE SAYS
When you are doing this make sure you read each option and sound them out. Remember you will come across some digraphs which are two letters that make one sound. In this example both 'ai' and 'ay' make the same sound, however the 'ay' digraph is used when a word ends with this sound.
  • Question 4

Tick the word that goes with the picture.

pink paint

CORRECT ANSWER
paint
EDDIE SAYS
Are you starting to get the hang of this yet? Sound each option out loud so you can hear all the sounds correctly. We can hear four sounds in the word 'p-ai-n-t'. Keep up the good effort!
  • Question 5

Tick the word that goes with the picture.

sailing boat

CORRECT ANSWER
sail
EDDIE SAYS
Did you get it right? Remember that they although both 'ai' and 'ay' make the long 'a' sound we are looking at, if we can hear the sound in the middle or start of a word it is normally the 'ai' digraph that is used. You can do this! Try the next question.
  • Question 6

Tick the word that goes with the picture.

nail

CORRECT ANSWER
nail
EDDIE SAYS
Are you an expert yet? We are looking and learning about the 'ai' digraph. It makes the long 'a' sound. The 'ay' digraph does also make this sound but remember 'ay' can be found at the end of words rather than the middle.
  • Question 7

This time, listen to the sound clip and write the missing word in the answer box.

Josie had a __________ in her foot.

CORRECT ANSWER
pain
EDDIE SAYS
How did you get on? Listen to the sound clip carefully. If you are unsure of the sounds in the missing word, say them slowly and aloud to yourself. Break the word up so you can hear each sound. The word 'pain' has four sounds 'p-ai-n'. Keep it up superstar!
  • Question 8

Listen to the sound clip and write the missing word in the answer box.

Please __________ for me!

CORRECT ANSWER
wait
EDDIE SAYS
Again with this example. Say it slowly and break down the word. It can help to say the word in a robot voice. This sometimes helps us to hear each sound that makes up the word we are looking at. The word 'wait' has three sounds 'w-ai-t'. Not many more to go! Try the next question.
  • Question 9

Listen to the sound clip and write the missing word in the answer box.

My hen __________ two eggs.

CORRECT ANSWER
laid
EDDIE SAYS
Have you got the hang of this now? The word 'laid' has three sounds 'l-ai-d'. Remember you can robot talk the word to break it down. Give the last question a try!
  • Question 10

Listen to the sound clip and write the missing word in the answer box.

We went out in the __________.

CORRECT ANSWER
rain
EDDIE SAYS
Last question! How did you do? The word 'rain' has three sounds 'r-ai-n'. The digraph 'ai' makes the long 'a' sound that you can hear in the word 'rain'. Great effort!
