A phoneme is a unit of sound. The short 'oo' phoneme sounds like this:
The short 'oo' phoneme isn't always spelt with the letters 'oo'. It is often spelt with 'u'.
It can sometimes be spelt with 'o', as in wolf and woman, and even 'oul' as in could, would and should.
Note
If you live in some parts of Britain you may say some of these words with the long 'oo' phoneme and not the short 'oo' phoneme.
