Worksheet Overview

We often find that longer, non-fiction texts contain headings and subheadings.

A heading is the title for a piece of writing (this might be one page in a non-fiction book).

Subheadings are headings for smaller 'chunks' of information.  Each section of one or two paragraphs may have its own subheading.

Here's an example of headings and subheadings in a short text:

Polar Bears

Habitat

Polar bears live in the very far north of the planet, in the Arctic.  They are very good swimmers so they live near coasts and on the sea ice.

Diet

Polar bears are carnivores and eat meat.  They eat mostly seals that they catch in the water or on the ice.  However, they will also sometimes eat other mammals such as walrus.  If sea mammals are scarce, they occasionally hunt and eat land mammals such as small reindeer or rodents, though this is rare.

If you have any non-fiction books you can look inside to see if you can identify any headings or subheadings inside!

In this activity, you will be reading some sentences and paragraphs to work out what their heading or subheading could be.
