Here we have some arrays to help you work out how to answer multiplication questions. 

 

 3 rows of 2 stars 

 

Count the rows.

There are 3 rows.

 

Count the number of stars in each row.

There are 2 stars in each row.

 

If we think of the x sign as 'lots of' this means 3 lots of 2. 

We write this as 3 × 2 = 

 

To work out the answer, we count all the stars.

We can count in 2s: 2, 4, 6 

 

There are 6 stars so 3 x 2 = 6

 

 

Let's have a look at another one:

 

 3 rows of 5 stars 

 

Count the rows.

There are 3 rows.

 

Count the number of stars in each row.

There are 5 stars in each row.

 

If we think of the x sign as 'lots of' this means 3 lots of 5.

We write this as 3 × 5 = 

 

To work out the answer, we count all the stars.

We can count in 5s: 5, 10, 15 

 

There are 15 stars so 3 x 5 = 15
