In this activity, we will be looking at squares split into quarters. 

 

Squares can be split into four parts like this:

Quarters are when a whole shape or object has been split into four equal parts. 

Equal means exactly the same.

So a square split into equal parts means four parts that are exactly the same size. 

Here is a square split into equal parts which means it is split into quarters.

Can you see that each part is exactly the same size this time?

 

Sometimes we need to find one quarter of a square. This means that the square must be split into quarters and one of the quarters will be shaded a different colour like this:
