Curriculum topic:   Number: Addition and Subtraction

Curriculum subtopic:   Make Mathematical Statements Using +, - and =

Difficulty level:

### QUESTION 1 of 10

We use ADDING when we increase or finish with more objects.

Example

Fatima has 3 teddies and her parents give her 2 more.

How many does she have now?

We work out 3 + 2 because she now has 3 teddies and 2 more.

3 + 2 = 5

She has 5 teddies now.

We use TAKING AWAY or SUBTRACTING when we decrease or finish with fewer objects.

Example

Fatima has 6 teddies and she gives 2 to her brother.

How many does she have now?

We work out 6 - 2 because she now has 2 teddies less than the 6 she started with.

6 - 2 = 4

She has 4 teddies now.

Fatima has 6 teddies and her parents give her 2 more.

Choose the calculation to work out how many teddies she has now.

6 + 2 = 7

6 + 2 = 8

6 - 3 = 2

6 - 2 = 4

Bill has 7 marbles and he is given 8 more.

Choose the calculation to work out how many marbles he has now.

7 - 8 = 1

7 + 8 = 15

7 + 8 = 18

8 - 7 = 1

Jack has 12 apples and he gives 9 to his sister.

Choose the calculation to work out how many apples he has now.

9 - 12 = 3

9 + 12 = 21

12 + 9 = 3

12 - 9 = 3

Anna has 7 bricks and her brother gives her 12 more.

Choose the calculation to work out how many bricks she has now.

7 + 12 = 19

7 + 12 = 14

12 - 7 = 5

7 - 12 = 19

Jack has 17 eggs and he uses 9 in a recipe.

Choose the calculation to work out how many eggs he has left.

17 - 9 = 8

17 + 9 = 8

17 + 8 = 9

17 - 8 = 9

Amy has 14 chickens and she gives 14 away.

Choose the calculation to work out how many chickens she has left.

0 + 14 = 14

14 - 0 = 14

14 + 14 = 0

14 - 14 = 0

Aisha has 7 books and her parents give her 10 more.

Choose the calculation to work out how many books she has now.

7 + 10 = 17

10 - 7 = 10

10 - 7 = 3

7 + 10 = 7

Ibrahim has 14 books and he has read 8 of them.

Choose the calculation to work out how many books he still has left to read.

14 + 8 = 6

14 - 8 = 7

14 + 8 = 22

14 - 8 = 6

Charlie has 14 comics and he gives 6 of them to the jumble sale.

Choose the calculation to work out how many comics he has left.

14 + 6 = 20

20 + 14 = 6

14 - 6 = 8

Lola is given 9 presents and her friends give her 8 more.

Choose the calculation to work out how many presents she has now.
