In this activity, we will be looking at the value of each digit in a 2-digit number.
A 2-digit number is made up of tens and ones.
Here we have 52.
52 is made up of the digits 5 and 2 but each digit has a different value.
Let's put 52 into a place value chart:
Tens | Ones |
5 | 2 |
The 5 is worth 5 tens which is the same as 5 x 10 = 50
The 2 is worth 2 ones which is the same as 2 x 1 = 2
So if we partition 52 we will get 50 + 2
Reminder: the word partition means to split up!
This can be written like this:
Another way we will look at the place value of numbers in this activity is like this:
Here we have 52 split into tens and ones.
10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 50
1 + 1 = 2
50 + 2 = 52
This can really help us to understand the value of each digit.
Ok, shall we have a go at some questions about place value?
