In this activity, there will be two different types of question.
You will need to use all your knowledge of place value and number facts to solve the problems.
Example 1
Using two digits from the numbers below, what is the biggest number you can make?
Let's have a look at how we can work this out.
If we are making a 2-digit number, it will have tens and ones.
If we are making the biggest number, then we want the tens number to be the biggest as the tens are worth more.
The biggest number we have here is 9, so we need to give our number 9 tens.
If we use one of the other numbers as our ones we can make the numbers 97 and 91.
Which number is the biggest?
97 is the biggest number we can make using these digits.
Example 2
Which two numbers would go in the balls to make 100?
a. 20
b. 30
c. 80
d. 50
One way to work this out is to think about our number bonds.
Which sets of numbers go together to make 10?
1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5.
If we make each of these numbers 10 times bigger, then they are the multiples of 10 that make 100!
10 and 90, 20 and 80, 30 and 70, 40 and 60, 50 and 50.
This means the numbers that go together here to make 100 are 20 and 80.
Ok, shall we have a go at some of these questions now?
