We can use this number line to convert fractions into decimals.
From the number line, we know that
¾ = 0.75
This is 0 ones, 7 tenths and 5 hundredths.
This also means that.....
1¾ = 1.75
2¾ = 2.75
3¾ = 3.75
4¾ = 4.75 etc...
We can see that it is simple to convert between fractions and decimals using tenths.
4.6 means 4 whole numbers and 6 tenths, which we can write as 4 and 6/10
3.5 means 3 whole numbers and 5 tenths, which we can write as 3 and 5/10 or simplify to make 3 and 1/2
2 and 2/10 means 2 whole numbers and 2 tenths, which we can write as 2.2
Sometimes, we might have improper fractions where the top number is larger than the bottom one.
17/10 means 17 tenths. If we divide 17 by 10, we make 1 and 7 tenths, which we can write as 1.7
23/10 can also be divided by 10 to make 2 and 3 tenths, which we write as 2.3
We can also use hundredths to convert between fractions and decimals.
6.43 means 6 whole numbers, 4 tenths and 3 hundredths. It can also means 6 whole numbers and 43 hundredths.
So we can write 6.43 as 6 and 43/100
5 and 27/100 means 5 whole numbers and 27 hundredths, which can be written as 5.27
