'Solve Problems Using Multiplication of Mixed Numbers by Whole Numbers' worksheet

Key stage:  KS 2

Year:  Year 5 Maths worksheets

Curriculum topic:   Number: Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Curriculum subtopic:   Multiply Fractions

Difficulty level:

Worksheet Overview

In this activity, we will be learning how to multiply mixed numbers by whole numbers.

Look at the diagram below which shows one and 1/4 of a rectangle shaded.

That is one whole rectangle and 1⁄4 of a rectangle.

Fraction rectangle 4/4 = 1  Fraction rectangle 1/4

Let's try an example question using this diagram.

Example

Multiply one and 1/4 by 4.

Answer

This will give 4 lots of one and 4 lots of 1/4.

1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4

1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 4/4

4 and 4/4 is the same as 5 wholes.

Fraction rectangle 4/4 = 1  Fraction rectangle 4/4 = 1  Fraction rectangle 4/4 = 1  Fraction rectangle 4/4 = 1  Fraction rectangle 4/4 = 1

4 x 1 and 1/4 = 5.

We could also do the same calculation without the diagram.

4 x 1 1/4.

First of all, you need to multiply the whole numbers.

4 x 1 = 4

Next, multiply the fraction.

4 x 1⁄4 = 4/4 which equals 1

Finally, add the two answers together: 4 + 1 = 5

Now it's your turn to try some of these yourself.
