Work out Percentage Discounts

In this activity, we will calculate the value of a percentage discount and the reduced price of an item.

 

You may use a calculator for this activity!

 

 To calculate a percentage discount we:

Find the percentage given

Then subtract it from the original price to give the new price!

A toy train was £30 in the toy shop.

This week they were giving a discount of 20%

1)  How much is the discount on the train?

2)  What is the new price of the train?

 

 

Answer

20% = 20/100 (while we are using a calculator this is an easier way)

1) To find 20% of £30

20% = 30 x 20/100 = £6

The discount is £6

 

2) The reduced price of the train is £30 - £6 = £24
