Around our homes are many things that we call everyday objects.
These objects are made from different materials.
There are two categories of materials.
Natural materials are those that come from the world around us.
Here some natural materials.
wood | wool | clay | rock |
Man-made materials are those that don't occur naturally in the world - they have been made by people.
Here are some man-made materials.
plastic | glass | paper | fabric |
Note: some fabric is made from a plant called cotton. Cotton is a natural material.
Have a look at this picture of a drink carton.
What do you think it is made of? What is the straw made of?
Are they natural or man-made materials?
.
The carton is made from thick paper with a plastic lining on the inside. The straw is made from plastic.
All of these materials are man-made.
Plastic and thick paper are light in weight and therefore a good choice for a drink carton.
Plastic can also hold water.
In this activity, you will practise naming and choosing the correct materials for different objects and deciding if they are natural or man-made.
