Worksheet Overview

QUESTION 1 of 10

Hello word detective, you’ve arrived at just the right time.

Can you help us solve the following puzzle?

We need to remove a letter from the word below so that we are left with a real word:

stoop

We cannot jumble the order of the letters.

The letter can be removed from anywhere in the word.

Let’s try and remove the first letter:

stoop -> toop - this is not a real word

How about the second letter?

stoop -> soop - also, not a real word

Let’s try the third letter:

stoop -> stop - We have found the real word!

                      policeman saying stop

The correct letter to remove is o, as this leaves us with the real word stop.

Let's look at another challenge now.

Which letter could we remove from this word to make another real word?

munch

Let’s see what the word would look like with different letters removed:

Letter  Word created  Real or not?
 1st  unch  Not real
 2nd  mnch  Not real
3rd  much  Real! We have a winner!
 4th  munh  Not real
 5th  munc  Not real

The correct letter to remove is n as it creates the word much.

Let’s try one more together.

Which letter could we remove from this word to make another real word?

pound

a pound coin

Let’s see what the word would look like with different letters removed:

Letter  Word created  Real or not?
 1st  ound  Not real
 2nd  pund  Not real
3rd  pond  Real! We have a winner!
 4th  poud  Not real
 5th  poun  Not real

Now, it’s your turn to find letters that can be removed from a word to leave another real word.

Pssstt!! Here’s a handy hint to help you reach superstar status:

Say each of the words out loud, this will help you to recognise if it is a real word.

Good luck letter remover!
