Worksheet Overview

QUESTION 1 of 10

You may have already looked at antonyms (words meaning the opposite to each other) but now here’s a challenge about synonyms.

Can you help us out with these, word detective?

What do you notice about the words below?

gleam        shine         glimmer

They all mean the same thing…glow!

glowing candle

These words are called synonyms.

Synonyms are words that mean the same or have a very similar meaning to other words.

We could also use the following words as synonyms for glow: radiance, luminosity, brilliance.

Which of the following are synonyms for excited?

lively        bored        elated        enthusiastic        relaxed

Lively, elated and enthusiastic are all synonyms for excited as they mean the same or a similar thing.

A thesaurus is a great resource to use to look up synonyms for words.

Let’s try another:

Which of the following words is a synonym for spring?

leap        sit        jog

The answer is leap as it has the closest meaning to spring.

little girl jumping

Pssstt!! Here’s a handy hint to help you reach superstar status:

The first letter of the word synonym is the same as the first letter for similar.  It’s a clever trick to remember what synonym means.

If you come across any new words in this activity, make a note of them so that you can use them in your writing.

notepad and pen

  • Question 1

Choose the word below that is a synonym for disorderly.

CORRECT ANSWER
Chaotic
EDDIE SAYS
There are a couple of antonyms here - tidy and neat are when things are ordered and arranged carefully. Display is there to trick you as it shares the same prefix as our word. It is the last option that is our synonym here - if something is in chaos it is messy, confusing and definitely disorderly!
  • Question 2

Underline the word which is a synonym for limit.

CORRECT ANSWER
Reset, Restrict, Constrict, Contain
EDDIE SAYS
Some of these words look very similar to each other, so take your time to think about what they mean.
If you reset something, you return it to how it was when you started eg you could reset a game if you weren't doing very well!
Have you ever heard of a boa constrictor snake? It is a snake that squeezes its prey - the word constrict means squeeze.
Contain doesn't seem to match here, leaving us with our synonym restrict. You might have your time playing games at home restricted so that you also have time for your homework!
  • Question 3

Choose the word from the following list which means the same as bendable.

Weak        Soft        Flexible        Squeezable

CORRECT ANSWER
Flexible
EDDIE SAYS
While it is usually possible to bend something that is weak, soft or squeezable, we couldn't actually switch these words for bendable in a sentence. If you do dance or gymnastics, you are probably very flexible - it means you can bend different parts of your body. Be careful to spell this word correctly to ensure that you receive the marks you deserve if you get it right!
  • Question 4

Select the word which means the same as light.

CORRECT ANSWER
Faint
EDDIE SAYS
Be careful - a couple of the words here are trying to trick you into thinking of light as something that lights up or glows. However, if you asked someone to switch the light on or mentioned that your tablet lights up when it is switched on, you couldn't swap in the words sparkling or glittering to replace light.
Dark is definitely an antonym, so the correct answer here is faint. When you draw a picture, do you use light, faint pencil strokes first so that you can easily rub them out if you make a mistake?
  • Question 5

Choose the word from the following list which means the same as turn.

Side        Length        Width        Angle

CORRECT ANSWER
Angle
EDDIE SAYS
You could use your maths knowledge to answer this question. Where part of a shape turns in a different direction, like the corner of a square, it is called an angle.
The other words here refer to straight parts of a shape. Be careful to spell this word correctly to ensure that you receive the marks you deserve if you get it right!
  • Question 6

Ready to start, word detective?

Match the words which have the same meaning.

CORRECT ANSWER

Column A

Column B

Unhurried
Slow
Speed
Pace
Rush
Race
Sprint
Run
EDDIE SAYS
A challenging start here! There are words which are similar in meaning so we need to take our time to match the correct synonyms.
There is only one word on the left that would match with being slow, so unhurried is a synonym for slow - the opposite of hurry.
Be careful with speed - you might think that race and run are to do with being speedy but you couldn't actually switch them with speed in a sentence. For example: What speed can you go on your bike? Pace is another word for speed - a pacemaker in a race is someone who sets the speed.
Sprint must go with run as being in a rush does not always mean you are running - you might be rushing to finish your homework or rushing to eat your dinner and in both of these cases you are sitting down!
  • Question 7

Underline the word which is a synonym for argument.

CORRECT ANSWER
Conflict, Confuse, Confirm, Conquer
EDDIE SAYS
These words all look very similar so take your time to consider their meanings.
Conflict and conquer are the most likely answers here. Conquer is used when a battle is won, for example, in a story about knights they might conquer a town. This is much more than just having an argument with the people who live there!
If you are in conflict with someone, it means you are arguing with them, so this is our synonym here.
  • Question 8

Underline the word which is a synonym for statement.

CORRECT ANSWER
Secret, Announcement, Script, Decision
EDDIE SAYS
You might have seen people on the news make a statement if they are describing something that is happening. If they are talking about it on TV, it is definitely not a secret! The statement could be read from a script or it could be about a decision, but these aren't true synonyms. Here, the word you could switch it with is announcement. Did you get that one?
  • Question 9

Here you are at question number 10!

Choose the word from the following list which means the same as centre.

Base        Crown        Tip        Core        Foundation

CORRECT ANSWER
Core
EDDIE SAYS
This group of words has some synonyms for top and some for bottom, so which is the synonym for centre?
If you have ever heard of the core of the earth or the core of an apple, this should help - this refers to the middle of the earth or the middle of your apple!
Be careful to spell this word correctly to ensure that you receive the marks you deserve if you get it right! You're doing great work with your detecting! Why not try another synonym activity to get some more practice?
  • Question 10

How's the detecting going so far?

Put a tick in the box which matches the word in each row to its correct synonym across the top of the table.

You should only tick one box in each row.

CORRECT ANSWER
 OathReliableDisloyalReturn
Promise
Betray
Loyal
Repay
EDDIE SAYS
These are all words that you could use to think about a friendship. If you make a promise to a friend, you make an oath. Beavers and Brownies make an oath to promise to do their best when they join the Scouts.
A reliable friend is loyal, whereas someone who is disloyal lets you down - that means to betray someone.
Finally, if you repay a favour to a friend, you return a favour.
