Explain the Meaning of Words

Words with similar meanings to each other are called synonyms. 

When we are reading, we might come across words and be unsure of their meaning. We could use a dictionary to help us understand the meaning, or a thesaurus to see other words with similar meanings. 

Let's have a look at some synonyms for some common words:

Happy		Cheerful Joyful Jolly Merry
Unwell		Poorly Under the weather Ill
Cold		Freezing Shivering  Chilly Icy

Sometimes, we might be asked to find a word in a piece of text which has the same meaning as something else.

For example, read the text below:

Brendan was cold because he forgot his hat.

Find and copy one word that means the same as chilly. 

Which word would you copy? Cold? That's right!

We're looking for a synonym of the word we have been given.

Sometimes, we might be asked to explain what a word means.
