'Understand How to Sequence Sentences' worksheet

Curriculum topic:   Writing: Composition

Curriculum subtopic:   Sequence Sentences

Worksheet Overview

When we want to write something, such as a short story or diary entry, it is important to sequence sentences in the right order so that it makes sense.

These events are sequenced in the correct order to paint a picture of a rainbow:

Get the paint                                 Get the brushes                            Paint the rainbow

   paint pots        paint brushes           rainbow

These months of the year are sequenced in the wrong order and do not make sense:

November    February    June     April     May     July    March     August    September     January     October     December

These months of the year are sequenced in the right order:

January    February     March     April     May     June     July     August     September    October    November    December

We can sequence short simple sentences with a joining word in the middle.

Here, the joining word and is used. It makes this sentence longer into a compound sentence.

Can you spot the mistake in this sentence?

They washed the car and the children got the bucket.

The sentences are not sequenced in the correct order and don't make sense, as you need to get the bucket of water before you can wash the car.

               bucket of water    purple car

This is how the sentence should be:

The children got the bucket and they washed the car.

In this activity, you can practise putting words and sentences into the correct sequence so that they make sense.
