These letters are called vowels.
Listen to the sounds these vowels make:
| a | e | i | o | u |
If you put two vowels together to make a sound, it is called a digraph.
Listen to these digraphs.
| ai | |||
| ee | |||
| oo | |||
| oa | |||
| oi | |||
| ou | or | ||
| ea | or | ||
| ue | |||
| au | |||
| oe |
When you put another letter in the middle of the digraph, it splits the letters up in a word.
The digraph still makes the same sound, but it is called a split digraph.
| ee becomes e_e in even | |
| ie becomes i_e in white | |
| ue becomes u_e in June | |
| oe becomes o_e in alone | |
| ae becomes a_e in came |
Now let's use these sounds and spellings in this activity.
