Use Standard English

In this worksheet, students will practise their writing by using Standard English in place of informal, spoken forms of English.

Sometimes when we are speaking, especially to people we know well, we use non-standard (or locally spoken) forms of English. 

 

For example:

I done it by myself!

However, in our writing, we should always aim to use Standard English.  We should avoid slang (like 'kip' for 'sleep') and use the correct verb inflections.  This means changing the verb in the correct way depending on the tense. 

 

For example:

I did it by myself!

 

Here are some more examples of changing non-standard forms to Standard English:

 

We was - we were

I done - I did

I seen - I saw

I should of - I should have
