Some words are spelt with letters that we do not pronounce (say out loud). These letters are called silent letters.
In this activity, we are going to look at words which contain a silent s.
We will look at the following words and practise spelling them:
island
aisle
isle
debris
You can listen to them here:
Did you notice that aisle and isle sound the same even though they are spelt differently? They are homophones and have different meanings. An aisle is a small island and an aisle is a walkway in a church or supermarket. You can practise telling the difference between these homophones in another activity.
Spend a few minutes looking at these words before beginning the questions.
You could use Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check to practise them before we begin.
