  • Question 1

'Romeo and Juliet' is about two feuding families. One of these families is called the Montagues.

What is the name of the other family?

CORRECT ANSWER
Capulets
The Capulets
EDDIE SAYS
The Capulets are the other family. At the very beginning of the play we learn that the Capulets and the Montagues don't get on. We're told about their "ancient grudge" in the prologue.
  • Question 2

What is the name of Lord and Lady Capulet's child?

CORRECT ANSWER
Juliet
EDDIE SAYS
Juliet is a Capulet. So, that means Romeo is a Montague. Romeo and Juliet are the children in these two feuding families. This creates a lot of problems in the play!
  • Question 3

CORRECT ANSWER
Romeo and Juliet first meet at the Capulet feast
Romeo and Juliet's relationship has to be kept a secret because their families would not allow them to be together. They get married without anyone from their family knowing
EDDIE SAYS
Did you find the two that are correct? So, Romeo and Juliet first set eyes on each other at the Capulet feast. Here they have an instant connection and we see lots of flirting! Later on, they learn that they're from feuding families - Juliet, a Montague and Romeo, a Capulet. They know that their families wouldn't approve of their relationship, so they get married in secret. Their love for each other is presented as so strong that they're willing to go against their families.
  • Question 4

Who do Juliet's parents want her to marry?

CORRECT ANSWER
Paris
EDDIE SAYS
Paris is the correct answer here. Paris asks Lord Capulet if he can marry Juliet and initially Lord Capulet says that Juliet is a bit too young for marriage but agrees that Paris can marry her if he can win Juliet over. However, after Tybalt's death, Lord Capulet decides to arrange for the marriage of Juliet and Paris to help ease Juliet's grief for Tybalt. Of course, the audience know that she's already married to Romeo!
  • Question 5

Who helps Juliet to avoid a marriage to Paris?

CORRECT ANSWER
Friar Laurence
EDDIE SAYS
Friar Laurence helps Juliet. Juliet tells her father that she will marry Paris, to keep the peace. She then goes to Friar Laurence, telling him she will kill herself rather than go through with marrying Paris. Friar Laurence then concocts a plan. He gives Juliet a remedy that will make her appear dead, giving her time to escape the planned wedding and then reunite with Romeo.
  • Question 6

Who killed who?!

dagger

Try to complete the passage below.

CORRECT ANSWER
EDDIE SAYS
How did you do? First, Tybalt kills Mercutio. This is part of a brawl between the two feuding families and Tybalt really wants to kill Romeo. He ends up killing Mercutio under Romeo's arm. Romeo becomes intent on avenging Mercutio's death and succeeds in killing Tybalt.
  • Question 7

Who are Romeo's friends?

CORRECT ANSWER
Mercutio
Benvolio
EDDIE SAYS
Mercutio and Benvolio are on Romeo's side - in fact Benvolio is his cousin. In the brawls between the two feuding families, we see Mercutio and Benvolio fighting on Romeo's side. Tybalt is on the Capulet side, and is Juliet's cousin. He is desperate to fight Romeo and get revenge on him for gate-crashing the Capulet feast.
  • Question 8

What happens to Romeo after he kills Tybalt?

CORRECT ANSWER
He is banished
He runs away
EDDIE SAYS
Did you spot that two are correct? Romeo runs away. He knows that after the prince has already warned the families to stop fighting, that the consequences of him killing Tybalt will be severe, probably death. However, Prince Escalus announces, that Romeo is banished from Verona. He's not allowed to return or risk his life. We see the trusty Friar Lawrence helping once again. He helps Romeo stay in hiding in Mantua.
  • Question 9

Match the following to make correct sentences to summarise the end of the play.

Romeo and Juliet dead laying on the floor

CORRECT ANSWER

Column A

Column B

After Juliet drinks Friar Laurenc...
her family think she is dead and ...

EDDIE SAYS
Did you manage to match up the sentences? Miscommunication leads to some tragic events unfolding. The friar had planned to tell Romeo about Juliet's fake death but the letter never reaches him. Instead, Romeo hears that she's really dead. This leads him to kill himself and when she awakes to find him dead, Juliet then really kills herself. A series of mistakes lead to a terrible tragedy.
  • Question 10

To check your learning about the key characters in the play, have a go at the following true or false activity.

CORRECT ANSWER
 TrueFalse
Juliet is a Montague
Benvolio kills Tybalt
Romeo kills Tybalt
Tybalt kills Romeo
Tybalt kills Mercutio
Romeo is a Montague
Friar Laurence helps Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet both kill themselves at the end of the play
Lord and Lady Capulet want Juliet to marry Paris
EDDIE SAYS
How did you do? Remember that it's important to revise the key characters well for the exam. You may need to be able to write about how they're presented in an extract and then you will need to be able to choose another related part of the text. The more you know about the characters, the main events and where these crop up in the play, the easier the exam will be!
