 # Addition or Subtraction Statements (1)

In this worksheet, children must select the correct calculation based on the statement given. Key stage:  KS 1

Curriculum topic:   Number: Addition and Subtraction

Curriculum subtopic:   Make Mathematical Statements Using +, - and =

Difficulty level: ### QUESTION 1 of 10

We use ADDING when we increase or finish with more objects.

Example

Fatima has 3 teddies and her parents give her 2 more.

How many does she have now?

We work out 3 + 2 because she now has 3 teddies and 2 more.

3 + 2 = 5

She has 5 teddies now.

We use TAKING AWAY or SUBTRACTING when we decrease or finish with fewer objects.

Example

Fatima has 6 teddies and she gives 2 to her brother.

How many does she have now?

We work out 6 - 2 because she now has 2 teddies less than the 6 she started with.

6 - 2 = 4

She has 4 teddies now.

Fatima has 5 teddies and her parents give her 2 more.

Choose the calculation to work out how many teddies she has now.

5 - 2 = 3

5 - 3 = 2

5 + 2 = 8

5 + 2 = 7

Bill has 9 marbles and he is given 8 more.

Choose the calculation to work out how many marbles he has now.

8 - 9 = 17

9 + 8 = 18

9 + 8 = 17

9 - 8 = 1

Jack has 12 apples and he gives 4 to his sister.

Choose the calculation to work out how many apples he has now.

12 - 4 = 8

12 + 4 = 16

4 + 12 = 16

4 - 12 = 8

Anna has 9 bricks and her brother gives her 5 more.

Choose the calculation to work out how many bricks she has now.

9 - 5 = 4

9 - 5 = 14

9 + 5 = 14

9 + 5 = 19

Jack has 13 eggs and he uses 8 in a recipe.

Choose the calculation to work out how many eggs he has left.

8 - 13 = 5

13 + 8 = 21

8 + 13 = 21

13 - 8 = 5

Amy has 20 chickens and she gives 14 away.

Choose the calculation to work out how many chickens she has left.

20 - 14 = 6

20 + 14 = 6

14 - 20 = 6

6 + 14 = 20

Aisha has 15 books and her parents give her 5 more.

Choose the calculation to work out how many books she has now.

15 - 5 = 20

15 - 5 = 10

15 + 0 = 15

15 + 5 = 20

Ibrahim has 12 books and he has read 3 of them.

Choose the calculation to work out how many books he still has left to read.

12 - 3 = 9

12 + 3 = 9

12 - 3 = 15

12 + 3 = 15

Charlie has 20 comics and he gives 14 of them to the jumble sale.

Choose the calculation to work out how many comics he has left.

14 - 20 = 6

20 - 14 = 6

14 + 6 = 20

Lola is given 5 presents and her friends give her 7 more.

Choose the calculation to work out how many presents she has now.

7 - 5 = 2
