In this activity, we will be ordering intervals of time and working out intervals of time.
First of all, let's have a look at the different measurements of time.
The smallest measurement we will be looking at is seconds.
60 seconds makes one minute
60 minutes make one hour
24 hours make one day
Let's have a look at an example of ordering intervals of time:
Can you order these intervals of time from the shortest to the longest?
The units of time we have here are seconds and minutes. Seconds are the shortest amount of time.
We can start by ordering the seconds from the smallest amount to the biggest:
10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds
Then the longest amount of time is 1 minute as 1 minute is 60 seconds:
10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute
Now, let's have a look at an example of working out intervals of time:
How much time has passed between clock A and clock B?
A B
For this one, we need to work out how much time has passed between clock A and clock B.
Clock A reads 2 o'clock and clock B reads 5 o'clock.
So only the hour hand is different, so we can count on in hours from 2 o'clock:
3 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 5 o'clock.
Three hours have passed between clock A and clock B.
Shall we have a go at some questions?
Remember to read the questions carefully to check whether you are ordering them from the shortest to the longest or longest to shortest!
