In this activity, we're going to solve some problems involving place value.
Oh dear, some children are arguing over whose sunflower has grown the tallest.
Here are their results.
Name | Height in mm |
George | 235 |
Fatima | 253 |
Chloe | 1,032 |
Aisha | 893 |
Albie | 621 |
Sharma | 1,203 |
Let's use our knowledge of place value to put them in order, starting with the thousands column.
We can see that two of the numbers have 4 digits so these will be the tallest.
After these will be the 3-digit numbers.
First, Sharma 1,203 mm - has 1 thousand and 2 hundreds
Second, Chloe 1,032 mm - also has 1 thousand but no hundreds
Third, Aisha 893 mm - Aisha's flower has 8 lots of a hundred
Fourth, Albie 621 mm - Albie's flower has 6 lots of a hundred
Fifth, Fatima 253 mm - Fatima's flower has the same digit as George in the hundreds (200), but Fatima has a higher digit in the tens column
Sixth, George 235 mm
Now we'll have a go at solving some word problems - good luck!
