In this activity, we are going to find missing values by using the difference between given ratios!
Recap
If we are given 15 sweets ...
... and asked to share them in a ratio of 2 : 3
That means we have to split them into 2 + 3 = 5 parts in total.
15 ÷ 5 parts = 3 sweets for 1 part
Therefore, 2 parts = 2 x 3 sweets = 6 sweets
3 parts = 3 x 3 sweets = 9 sweets
Let's try a different type of question!
Example
Charlie and Daphne have some sweets in a bag.
They share them in a ratio of 4 : 7
Daphne has 15 more sweets than Charlie
How many sweets has Charlie got?
Answer
Charlie : Daphne
4 : 7
The difference is 15 sweets
Therefore, 7 parts - 4 parts = 3 parts
3 parts = 15 sweets
1 part = 15 ÷ 3 parts = 5 sweets for each part
One part = 5 sweets
Charlie has 2 parts
2 x 5 sweets = 10 sweets
Let's try some questions like this!
