In this activity, we will look at nets of 3D shapes.

 

The net of a 3D shape is what the shape would look like if it was opened out and laid flat.

Each 3D shape may have several different nets which would fold together to create the shape.

 

Let's look at a cube:

 

 

It is made up of 6 identical square faces

A base, a top and 4 sides

The net could look like this.........

 

 

We have the base, then the sides fold up and the top folds over the top of them.

Can you see it?

 

Here is one which will not work!

 

This will not work because one side is missing and the top has a side piece over it.

Can you see why this will not work?
