We use the metric system to measure quantities in our everyday life.
Look at the table which shows some commonly used units for measuring length, capacity and mass.
Length | Capacity | Mass |
millimetres | millilitres | milligrams |
centimetres | litres | grams |
metres | kilograms | |
kilometres | tonnes |
We need to be able to decide which measurement would be most appropriate to use in various circumstances.
For example, we wouldn't want to measure the distance from London to Edinburgh in centimetres!
Equally, we wouldn't want to measure the mass of an apple in tonnes!
Can you explain why these measures are not sensible?
We're going to look at some questions about choosing the most appropriate measure.
Let's get started.
