In this activity, we will multiply and divide mixed number fractions.
As you know, when multiplying fractions, we multiply the numerators together and we multiply the denominators together!
Recap
When dividing fractions we change to multiply as it is easier to handle.
We do this by using the inverse:
When the fractions are mixed numbers, we have to convert them to improper fractions before this.
Example
Step 1
Convert any mixed number fractions to improper fractions.
Rewrite the question with improper fractions:
Step 2
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together:
Step 3
Change back to a mixed number fraction if improper!
25 ÷ 12 = 2 with a remainder of 1
Answer is:
It might not be an improper answer, so it could be simplified instead.
Division is done the same way, but remember to do the inverse too!
Let's have a go at some questions now.
