Imagine that animals were like our friends at school. Just as we have different groups of friends based on similar interests, animals are grouped together based on what makes them similar.
Scientists have grouped animals into five main groups to make it easier for us to learn about them.
Birds are animals with feathers and wings. They are the ones that fly high up in the sky. They build nests in trees and lay eggs.
Mammals are animals that have hair or fur on their bodies and give birth to live babies that drink milk from their mothers when they are young.
Fish live in water all of the time. They have scales on their bodies and fins to help them swim. Instead of having lungs to breathe like we have, they have gills to breathe underwater.
Reptiles are animals with scaly skin such as snakes and lizards. They are cold-blooded which means that they like to warm up in the sun. Some of them lay eggs on land, while others have babies born from eggs inside their bodies.
Amphibians are like magical creatures. They start their lives in water, breathing through gills like fish. As they grow up, they learn to breathe air and live on land.
In this activity, we will be looking at fish.
