Explain What Factors Affect Solubility

In this worksheet, students will find out what determines the solubility of a substance.

'Explain What Factors Affect Solubility' worksheet

Key stage:  KS 3

Year:  Year 7 Science worksheets

Curriculum topic:   Chemistry: Pure and Impure Substances

Curriculum subtopic:   Mixtures, including Dissolving

Difficulty level:

Worksheet Overview

A mixture contains different substances that are not chemically joined to each other. A solution is a type of mixture formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent.

We can explain what happens when something dissolves using ideas about particles. The particles in a solid are all held together in a fixed arrangement. When the solid (the solute)  dissolves, the particles come away from each other as they mix with the particles in the liquid (the solvent).

What affects the speed at which a solute dissolves in a solvent?

Heating - warming the solvent helps the solute to dissolve, forming a solution quicker.

Stirring - using a spoon, stirring rod or just swirling the solvent and solute will speed up the rate of dissolving.

Solute size - a fine powder of the solute will dissolve faster than a large piece of a solute.

Are you happy with all that?
