The 11+ and Grammar Schools in Surrey (Kingston and Sutton)
Although not managed by Surrey County Council, grammar schools in the London boroughs of Kingston-Upon-Thames and Sutton are known as the Surrey 11+ region.
This article will explain the process for registering for and sitting the selective test required for entry to schools in these regions.
When is the Kingston-Upon-Thames 11+ exam sat?
For both schools, the selective test is done in two stages. You can register for your child to sit the Stage One test, by completing the Supplementary Information Form (SIF), on the schools' websites. Registration is between June and September in the year before your child would start at the school.
The Stage One tests are multiple choice Maths and English tests, which are marked by computer. There are no past papers available but the schools' information pages do have brief examples of how to answer the questions on the answer sheet. The Stage One test happens at the beginning of October.
Later in October, if your child has been successful, they will be invited to sit the Stage Two test. This does not mean that they are guaranteed a place at the school but that you can name the school on the Common Application Form (CAF). This is the form that you submit to the local authority at the end of October to apply for a secondary school place. If your child has been invited to the Stage Two tests, you can name Tiffin School or Tiffin Girls' School as a preference.
The Stage Two tests take place at the beginning of November. As a result of this, your child will be given a Combined Score. 20% of this score is made up of their Stage Two test scores (10% English and 10% Maths) and 80% is made up of your child's Stage One score (40% English and 40% Maths). These scores are then ranked by schools and offers of places are made according to this rank (this may also depend on whether your address is in the Inner or Outer Priority areas for the school). You will only find out your child's Combined Score if they have not been offered a place at the school.
Places are offered on 1st March, which is known as National Offer Day.

When is the London Borough of Sutton 11+ exam sat?
To be able to apply for a place at a fully or partially selective school in Sutton, your child must sit and pass the Selective Eligibility Test (SET).
For all schools, the SET is done in two stages. You can register for your child to sit the Stage One test, by completing the Supplementary Information Form (SIF), on the school website. Complete one form, even if you are planning to apply to more than one school. Registration is between June and September of the year before your child would start at that school. The tests for all schools are held on the same day. You will not be given a choice of venue but will be asked to sit the test at the school nearest to your home address.
The Stage One SET is made up of two papers - Maths and English - each 45 minutes long. The borough does not reveal who its exam provider is. The test takes place at the beginning of October.
Later in October, if your child has been successful, they will be invited to sit the Stage Two test. This does not mean that they are guaranteed a place at the school but that you can name the school(s) on the Common Application Form (CAF). This is the form that you submit to the local authority at the end of October to apply for a secondary school place. If your child has been invited to sit the Stage Two test, you can name a selective school as a preference.
The Stage Two tests take place at the beginning of November. The Stage Two SET is made up of an English test, which includes a comprehension and writing task, and a Maths test in a standard format and based on the Key Stage Two (primary) curriculum.
As a result of this, your child will be given a standardised score. Schools in Sutton set their own pass marks and use different ratios to produce this standardised score. Results from the first test will count towards the final standardised aggregate score but you will not find out the score unless your child is not subsequently offered a place at the school of your choice.
Places are offered on 1st March, which is known as National Offer Day.
