Let’s go on a symbol spotting adventure!

We are going to compare images and see if we can find a relationship between them, which can help us to see how one of them has been turned into another.

 

In this question type, we are given two images and we need to work out how the first has been turned into the second.

 

These are some changes to look out for:

 

Change Image Example
 The second image in each pair has been rotated (turned). 
 The second image is shaded in a different way.
 The second image has been reflected (is a mirror image). 
 Part of the second image has got bigger or smaller. 

 

Once you understand the pattern between the first pair of images, you can then apply this to the following image and find its mystery partner.

 

 

Take a look at this example:

 

Which of these options would the final shape turn into?

The theme is that the second image has been rotated (turned) 90 degrees clockwise (the same direction that a clock’s hands go in).

This makes our correct answer c as this shows a pentagon that has been rotated 90 degrees.


 

In this activity, you will need to be a symbol superstar and match images based on a pattern that you will find.

Remember to work out how the first image changes into the second image to find the rule.

Don’t forget to remove any obviously incorrect answers at this point.

How has the first image in the first pair changed to become the second image? If you look closely with your detective's eyes, you can see that it has flipped and become a mirror image of the first. We need to do the same thing with the first image in the second pair. If we do this, we can see that option b is the best fit in the second pair.

Did you work this one out detective? What has happened to turn the first image in the first pair into the second image? If we split the shape into two parts, we can see that the inner shape (the triangle) has become enlarged whilst the outer shape has stayed the same. We need to apply this same process to the first image of the second pair, enlarging the inner square but keeping the outer circle the same. If we do this, we find that option a is the best fit in the second pair.

This means that we need to do the same thing to the image at the start of the second pair. If we do this, we find that option d is the correct answer. It cannot be option c, as the shading here is too light.

Hmm! There's something fishy going on here detective! This is a size-themed question. In the first pair, the entire fish has been enlarged so we need to apply the same enlargement to the moon in the second pair. If we do this, we find that option d is the best fit in this pair. Option a is not the correct shape. Option b is the correct size but has the wrong shading. Option c has the correct shading but is the wrong size.

It's time to flip our shapes again here. If you put a mirror in the space between the shapes in the first pair, you can see that they identical reflections of each other. If we flip the first image of the second pair in the same way, it would look option c. Don't get caught out by options b and d. They have the triangle facing the right way, but the colours and positions of the balls inside do not match. Sometimes you have to get your detective's magnifying glass out to spot small changes like this!

This was a tricky one detective! To find the answer you need to spot that the images are rotating. The first image has rotated a quarter of a turn (or 90 degrees) in an anti-clockwise direction. Anti-clockwise means the opposite direction to the way the hands turn on a clock. We need to do the same thing with the first image in the second pair. This makes option a the correct answer. Be careful with shapes with segments, as it can be harder to spot if a pattern has been applied in the same way or not.

How has the first image in the first pair changed to become the second image? The eyes have become larger and filled with white - aren't they adorable? We need to apply the same change to the eyes in the triangular face. This makes option d the correct answer. Remember that enlargements and shrinks do not need to affect the whole image; they can just affect a specific part of it. Don't be caught out by option c. The shape of the mouth hasn't changed in the first image so it doesn't change in the second image. The triangle remains unhappy, I'm afraid.

The black sections of the boats in the first pair have become white, and the white sections have become black. We need to do the same thing to the first shape in the second pair, which makes option b the correct answer. If you spotted that one then you carried out a brilliant piece of detective work. Well done!
