Worksheet Overview

QUESTION 1 of 10

Hi word creator!

In this activity, we are going to be using letters from two words to make a new word.

Here are two groups of words. Letters from the two words on the outside of the brackets are used to create the word on the inside of the brackets.

yawn  (awash)  mash     pear ( ____ )  curly

We need to work out how yawn and mash can be joined to make the word awash, and then use this same rule to make a word with pear and curly.

In this case, we take the middle two letters of the first word and the last three letters of the third word.

yawn  (awash)  mash          pear  ( ____ )  curly

boy yawning

So the answer is early!

Let’s try another:

Can you work out the pattern here?

east  (self)  flow      lips ( ____ ) does

We need to work out how east and flow combine to make self.

The third letter from east goes with the first letter in self.

This means we need to use the third letter from lips in the first letter position of our mystery word, so it looks like this so far...p _ _ _

The first letter from east goes to the second letter in self. So we need to use the first letter from lips in the second letter position in our mystery word...pl _ _

The second letter from flow goes to the third letter in self. So we need to use the second letter from does in the third letter position in our mystery word...plo _

The first letter from flow goes to the fourth letter in self. We need to use the first letter from does in the fourth letter position in our mystery word...plod is the answer!

Pssstt!! Here’s a handy hint to help you reach superstar status:

Always check which letters from the first word have been used to make the second word.

  • Question 1

Hello word creator, here's a new activity that we need your help with!

Here are groups of words:

magazine (gate) international,  limited (____) talkative

The second word is missing in one of the groups of words.

Following the same pattern as the first pair, find the missing word.

CORRECT ANSWER
Milk
EDDIE SAYS
How did you get on with this first question? Remember that you have to find the pattern in the first group of words and then apply it to the second group. In the first group, the third and fourth letters of the first word (that is 'g' and 'a') have been added to the third and fourth letters of the third word (that is 't' and 'e'). So, to find the missing word in the second group of words, we need to merge the third and fourth letters of the words 'limited' and 'talkative' together - that is 'mi' and 'lk'. Once they are put together, we have created a new word - 'milk'! Just work it through carefully and it becomes easy with practice. Ready to become a word merge master? Then let's get onto the next question!
  • Question 2

Here are groups of words:

magazine (ages) restaurant,  croissant (___) tomorrow

The second word is missing in one of the groups of words.

Following the same pattern as the first pair, find the missing word.

CORRECT ANSWER
Room
EDDIE SAYS
Super effort! In the first group, the second and third letters of the word 'magazine' have been joined to the second and third letters of 'restaurant' to make the new word, 'ages'. If we apply the same rule to the second group and put the second and third letters of each of the words together, we end up with the word 'room'. It seems complicated but just take it slowly, one step at a time.
  • Question 3

Here are groups of words:

interesting (rested) painted, damaging (___) charger

The second word is missing in one of the groups of words.

Following the same pattern as the first group, find the missing word.

CORRECT ANSWER
Ginger
EDDIE SAYS
Ginger biscuit anyone?! In the first group, the fifth, sixth and seventh letters of 'interesting' and the fifth, sixth and seventh letters of 'painted' have been joined to make a new word. If we apply the same rule to the second group of words, we end up with the letters 'gin' and 'ger' which make the word 'ginger' when added together. Did you get this one?
  • Question 4

Here are yet more groups of words:

shortcake (home) smelly,  whizzing (___) identify

The second word is missing in one of the groups of words.

Following the same pattern as the first pair, find the missing word.

CORRECT ANSWER
Hide
EDDIE SAYS
These questions are whizzing by! In each group, the second and third letters of the first word and the second and third letters of the third word are joined to make a new word. This gives us the letters 'hi' and 'de' to create the word 'hide'.
  • Question 5

Tins
EDDIE SAYS
