Let’s go on a symbol spotting adventure!

We are going to compare images and see if we can find a relationship between them, which can help us to see how one of them has been turned into another.

 

In this question type, we are given two images and we need to work out how the first has been turned into the second.

 

These are some changes to look out for:

 

Change  Image example
 The second image in each pair has been rotated. 
 The second image is shaded in a different way. 
 The second image is reflected. 
 Part of the second image has got bigger or smaller. 

 

 

Once you understand the pattern between the first pair of images, you can then apply this to the following image and find its mystery partner.

The theme is that the second image has been rotated 90 degrees anti-clockwise and is shaded in the opposite way to the first.

To find the image which best completes the final pair, we have to find one that has been rotated 90 degrees anti-clockwise and is shaded in the opposite way.

If we apply this, we find that the answer is b!

How has the first image in the first pair been changed to become the second image? The shading of the outer shape has become heavier, as it we have used a felt-tip pen to go over this. We need to apply this same effect to the first image in the second pair. If we do this whilst keeping everything else the same, we find that option b is the correct answer. Be careful of option a which may look correct at first glance, but someone has sneakily shaded the central square here too so it is not correct. Look out for these "nearly-right" answers, which are provided to catch you out if you are going too quickly and not looking carefully enough.

What change can you see happening in the first pair? The shape with the dashed outline has been made much bigger. We call this an enlargement. The other triangle with the solid outline has remained the same size. If we apply this change to the first image in the second pair, we find that option a is the best fit in this pair. This question focuses on the shading of the images. In the first pair, the lightly shaded segments have become darker. We need to apply this same change to the square image in the second pair. If we change the left and right segments of the square to a darker shade, we create the image in option c. The other options have the wrong segments shaded or are the incorrect shape so try not to be caught out by their tricks!

Look at the friendly creatures here! How has the first smiling bug changed to become the second one? It has been rotated half a turn (or 180 degrees). We need to do the same with the beetle-type bug in the second pair. If we do this, we find that option a is the best fit. Don't be fooled by option c! If you look carefully, you can see that the shape of the bugs legs have changed. Sneaky!

If we apply this change to the first image of the second pair, we need to enlarge the central star but keep the outer circle the same size. This makes option d the correct answer. This is a rotation-themed question. The original arrow has rotated 90 degrees (or a quarter turn) in an anti-clockwise direction. We need to apply the same process to the first image in the second pair. If we do this then option b is the best fit. These rotation questions can be tricky ones detective. Even though the arrow points downwards in the first pair, the correct answer in the second pair is pointing upwards. It is all about which way the shape is turning.

We have some shading swapping going on here! The white circles in the first image have been shaded in lightly, whilst the lightly shaded parts have become more heavily shaded. We need to apply the same change with the first image of the second pair. If we change the white to grey and the grey to black within the first image of the second pair, then we create an image that looks like option c. The shading is correct in option e but the shapes are circles instead of squares. Be careful not to be caught out by answers that are nearly right. Always double-check your answers and don't rush. A good detective is very careful in his work.

This is a reflection question. In the first pair, the first image has been flipped in a vertical mirror to create the second image. If we flip the flag image in the same way, the second image will look like option e. Be careful of option c which looks correct at first glance, but the shaded squares are in the wrong places on the flag.

We need to apply this same pattern to the blank square in the second pair. If we do so, then we have a criss-crossed square that matches option c. Option a has no pattern. Option b has the correct pattern but it is too small. Options d and e are the correct size, but have the wrong pattern. Can your detective's eyes spot those tricky patterns?
