Worksheet Overview

Say these 5 vowels out loud as you read them:

a  e  i  o  u

Now, listen to the these sounds (phonemes). They sound like the letters you have just read out loud, but they look very different:

ai sounds like the vowel called letter a
ee sounds like the vowel called letter e
igh sounds like the vowel called letter i
oa sounds like the vowel called letter o
oo sounds like the vowel called letter u

These sounds (phonemes) are called long vowel sounds.

A long vowel phoneme is a sound which is the same as, or very similar to the letter name of one of the vowels.

Now, listen to the words in this worksheet. Try and work out which of the long vowel phonemes they contain and the letters (graphemes) that make those sounds.
