'Practise Spelling Common Exception Words' worksheet

Key stage:  KS 1

Year:  Year 2 English worksheets

Curriculum topic:   Writing: Transcription

Curriculum subtopic:   Spell Common Exception Words

Difficulty level:

Worksheet Overview

For lots of our writing, we are able to use our phonics learning to sound out words when spelling them.

There are other words which are exceptions to these spelling  'rules' and they cannot be sounded out. We just need to learn them by sight!

We are going to practise spelling some words which are commonly read and written in our writing, which is why they are called common exception words!

Let's have a look at a few examples. Click the sound button to hear the word.:

The words are:

beautiful

father

after

None of these words can be sounded out phonetically. Sometimes, it's best just to have a go and look at a word to see if it looks 'right'!

Let's have a look at some of these words and choose the correct spelling!
