Learn to Use Adverbs to Express Time

To make our writing more interesting and varied, we can use adverbs to add detail.

Adverbs are usually used to describe how a verb is done.  They often end in -ly (happily, quickly, reluctantly) but not always.  

Adverbs of time tell us when something happened (later, now).

In this activity, we will be using the adverbs of time then and soon. 

Let's look at how we can use them in our writing.

Here is a simple sentence:

He finished his homework.  

We can extend this sentence, giving the reader more information, by adding one of our adverbs of time.

Then, he finished his homework.

He played on his bike, then he finished his homework.

Soon, he finished his homework.

You can see that we need to use a comma after the adverb when it comes at the beginning of a sentence.
