An adverb is a word that can be used to describe how a verb is happening or being done.
An adverbial is a group of words that can be used in the same way.
In this activity, we will look at fronted adverbials. This simply means that the adverbial comes at the beginning of the sentence.
Fronted adverbials can be used to describe:
Time:
Later that day, Mary went for a walk.
Place:
Along the woodland path, Mary went for a walk.
How:
Alongside her mother, Mary went for a walk.
How often:
Every afternoon, Mary went for a walk.
Possibility:
If it wasn't raining, Mary went for a walk.
As you can see, fronted adverbials are always followed by a comma.
In this activity, we will practise identifying fronted adverbials in sentences.
