There are some words that many of us find difficult to spell. They are really important for our writing though, so we need to practise them. Sometimes, there are rules we can learn that really help with this.
Today we will look at the rule 'i before e except after c'.
It can help us to know when to use ie or ei to spell the 'ee' sound.
For most words we use ie:
thief
believe
piece
However, if it comes straight after the letter c then we use ei:
receive
ceiling
As always, there are some exceptions (protein, seize, caffeine), but the rule generally holds true.
