When we are writing, we can sometimes use words that have the same meaning as others.
These are called synonyms.
Synonyms can mean exactly the same thing, or have a slight difference, depending on the sentence.
For example, we can describe a large tree or we can have an enormous tree.
Large and enormous both mean very big, but depending on which one we choose, our reader has a different picture in their minds.
Synonyms can also add variety to our writing. Rather than repeating a word, we can add in synonyms to emphasise our point and keep descriptions varied for the reader.
The small mouse scurried into the small hole through the small gap.
Becomes..
The small mouse scurried into the miniscule hole through the tiny gap.
It just becomes more interesting to read!
In this activity, we will be looking at synonyms and how they create meaning in our work.
If you are ready, let's get started with some questions.
