Worksheet Overview

In this activity, we will be reading a fictional extract and using our inference skills to see what we can learn about the characters.

Read the following extract:

“Gracie!” Dad called out when he walked through the front door. “Gracie, are you there? It’d be really nice if you could come and say “hi” when I’m home after a hard day at work!”

Gracie didn’t answer.

Dad kicked off his shoes and walked into the living room. He stopped still as he noticed the shattered mirror that hung over the mantelpiece. A football lay amongst the shards of glass that were scattered all over the floor. Tiny droplets of blood led away from the mess like breadcrumbs.

Shards of glass

“For goodness sake,” Dad muttered. “Gracie!”

He made his way back to the hallway to shout up the stairs but then noticed Gracie’s trainers were missing. Dad got his mobile phone out and tried to call Gracie.

“Welcome to the voicemail of Gracie Walton, please leave a message after…” Dad hung up. He’d go and get her, he knew where she’d be. He was just hoping she hadn’t hurt herself too much!

Now we've read it, let's have a go at the questions.

We can look back at the extract at any point by clicking on the red help button on the screen.
