Worksheet Overview

QUESTION 1 of 10

Greetings word detective!

Which word from the set of brackets would best finish this sentence??

Go is to leave as stop is to (last, begin, halt).

First, we have to work out how the word go is connected to the word leave. Go is another word which means the same as leave. We call this a synonym

This means we have to select a word which is a synonym for stop in order to best complete the sentence.

The correct answer is halt, as it is a synonym for stop.

In this type of question, you must always find the connection between the words first.

The connection isn’t always a synonym.

Here are some other connections to look out for:

Connection Example
Synonyms (similar meaning) Start is to begin...
Antonyms (opposite meaning) On is to off...
What something is made of Shirt is to cotton...
What something goes inside of Tea is to teapot...

Now let’s try another question:

Water is to bath as air is to (breath, balloon, outside).

First, work out how the word water is connected to the word bath. A bath is something we put water inside.

This means we have to select a word that air goes inside.

The correct answer is balloon as we blow air into a balloon to inflate it.

Now it’s your turn.

Remember to find those connections!?

  • Question 1

Select the correct connection from the options below.

Summer is to hot as winter is to (December, cold, snow).

CORRECT ANSWER
Cold
EDDIE SAYS
Our connection with summer is telling us what we expect the temperature to be like in summer, so we need to find the same for winter.
Be careful of snow - that's a specific weather, not a description of temperature! So our answer is cold.
  • Question 2

Underline the correct connection.

Horse is to stable as pig is to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Mud, Field, Cage, Pen
EDDIE SAYS
This one's for animal loving word detectives.
If a horse is kept inside, it lives in a stable. So we need to think where a pig is kept. Have you heard of a pigpen? If you have, well done, as this gives us our connection.
  • Question 3

Type the correct answer in the brackets in the box below.

Apple is to fruit as carrot is to (orange, vegetable, healthy, crunchy).

CORRECT ANSWER
Vegetable
EDDIE SAYS
An apple is a type of fruit so we need to look to see if we can match carrot to what it is a type of - and that would be a vegetable.
Do you know the difference? Usually fruit grows on trees or plants from a seed, while vegetables grow in the ground.
  • Question 4

Anger is to rage as terrify is to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Scare
EDDIE SAYS
Someone who feels really angry feels as if they are in a rage! We have a synonym connection between these words - so can you spot the synonym for terrify? It would be scare.
Watch out for scream - it's more of a reaction to being frightened than being an actual synonym for the word terrify.
Another possible trick one could be worry - but it's not quite strong enough to mean terrify.
  • Question 5

Find the correct answer to this phrase from the choices below.

Type the answer in the blank box.

Start is to birth as end is to (lose, final, trophy, award).

CORRECT ANSWER
EDDIE SAYS
When we see the word birth we normally think of a baby starting its life. You can also think about the birth of a company or even of a new idea! So it means start in different ways.
Therefore, we need a synonym for end - that would be final as it signals the end of an activity, or the last day of something or even the end of a competition like a football final!
Let's see what words we need to hunt for next!
  • Question 6

Underline the correct answer.

Find is to lose as tidy is to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Chores, Ordered, Messy, Ruined
EDDIE SAYS
The opposite of finding something is losing something! So what is the opposite of tidy?
You might have to clean your room if it's messy. When you're room is untidy, it's not quite ruined so that would be a bit strong!
  • Question 7

Type the correct answer from the brackets in the box below.

Brother is to sister as aunt is to (dad, grandad, cousin, uncle).

CORRECT ANSWER
Uncle
EDDIE SAYS
If you have siblings, you know that you call your boy siblings your brothers and your girl siblings your sisters.
So we need to make the same male/female link with aunt. That would be your uncle - aunts and uncles are your mum and dad's brothers and sisters.
  • Question 8

Find the correct answer to this phrase from the choices below.

Type it into the blank space.

Medicine is to unwell as drink is to (hungry, tired, thirsty, bored).

CORRECT ANSWER
EDDIE SAYS
You take medicine when you don't feel very well - so when do you have a drink? That would be when you're feeling thirsty!
  • Question 9

Underline the correct connection.

Kind is to type as alike is to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Friendly, Similar, Identical
EDDIE SAYS
There are two meanings to the word kind. You might have kind, caring friends, but it can also mean a type - like a kind of dog.
So we have to find synonyms here. If people look alike, it means they look similar - but they are not SO similar that they look identical.
  • Question 10

Type the correct answer from the brackets into the box below.

Book is to read as ruler is to (measure, short, long, heavy).

CORRECT ANSWER
Measure
EDDIE SAYS
The first connection is the action you would do with the object - you would read a book. So we need to match ruler with the action you do with it. You would use a ruler to measure, so this is our connection.
The other words are about the results of the measuring - you might find out if something is longer or shorter, so their meanings don't quite work with our connection.
