Worksheet Overview

QUESTION 1 of 10

Greetings word detective!  Which word from the set of brackets would best finish this sentence?

Start is to begin as end is to (send, more, finish).

First, we have to work out how the word start is connected to the word begin. Begin is another word which means the same as start. We call this a synonym.

This means we have to select a word which is a synonym for end in order to best complete the sentence.

The correct answer is finish, as it is a synonym for end.

In this type of question, you must always find the connection between the words first. The connection isn’t always a synonym. Here are some other connections to look out for.

Connection Example
Synonyms (similar meaning) Start is to begin...
Antonyms (opposite meaning) On is to off...
What something is made of Shirt is to cotton...
What something goes inside of Tea is to teapot...

Now let’s try another question:

Coffee is to mug as water is to (table, glass, plastic).

First, work out how the word coffee is connected to the word mug. A mug is something we put coffee inside.

This means we have to select a word that water goes inside.

The correct answer is glass as it is something we put water inside.

Now it’s your turn.

Remember to find those connections!

  • Question 1

Select the correct connection from the options below.

Sun is to day as moon is to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Night
EDDIE SAYS
OK, word detective, remember, we're not looking to describe the moon, so crescent, glow and crater don't fit the connection. It's all about the link we can make!
We tend to link sun to day and moon to night, giving us the connection.
  • Question 2

Underline the correct connection.

Sock is to foot as glove is to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Hand, Thumb, Finger, Wave
EDDIE SAYS
When you wear socks and gloves you want your whole foot or hand to be cosy, not just one toe or just your thumb! So just like a sock covers your whole foot, a glove covers your whole hand!
We have our connection!
  • Question 3

Type the correct answer from the brackets in the box below.

Ink is to pen as lead is to (sketch, erase, pencil, crayon).

CORRECT ANSWER
Pencil
EDDIE SAYS
What's the difference between a pen and a pencil? Quite simply, pens write with ink, while pencils write with lead.
Be careful of crayon; it is actually wax which allows you to draw and colour with a crayon, not lead!
  • Question 4

Read is to book as watch is to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Television
EDDIE SAYS
When enjoying a book, you are reading the words to follow the story, but when you watch TV you watch the images to follow the story.
Don't let computer trick you - I know lots of people do watch things on their computer but there are lots of others uses for a computer too, making television the closer connection to book here.
  • Question 5

Find and match the correct answer below to this phrase. Match the wrong answers to 'incorrect'.

Ring is to finger as watch is to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Wrist
EDDIE SAYS
This time, word detective, you need to think about where you wear a ring and a watch. This gives you the connection to wrist.
Don't muddle up the other meanings of these words - watch does means stare and ring can mean you phone someone, but these would be the verb forms of these words (actions) whereas we are thinking about the nouns (objects).
  • Question 6

Underline the correct answer.

Paws are to dog as hooves are to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Pig, Horse, Kitten, Bird, Feet
EDDIE SAYS
Different animals tend to have different names for their feet. Pigs have trotters and birds have talons.
This leaves us with horses as having hooves- they are certainly bigger and harder than paws or trotters!
  • Question 7

Type the correct answer in the brackets in the box below.

Awake is to morning as asleep is to (nap, bed, evening, night).

CORRECT ANSWER
Night
EDDIE SAYS
To figure out this one, you just need to think about what you're mostly likely to be doing at these different times of day for this question.
Unless you are staying up for a midnight feast, you would be asleep at night! Evening is usually a bit too early to be asleep - it's more likely you're eating dinner at this time!
  • Question 8

Find and match the correct answer below to this phrase. Match the wrong answers to 'incorrect'.

Green is to leaf as brown is to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Tree
EDDIE SAYS
Trees can all look different but if you were going to draw a picture of a tree which two colours do you think you'd be mostly likely to choose? It's probably green for leaves and brown for the branches!
Don't let autumn trick you just because many leaves go brown in autumn!
  • Question 9

Underline the correct connection.

Trunk is to elephant as snout is to ______.

CORRECT ANSWER
Pig, Bird, Nose, Muzzle
EDDIE SAYS
Let's find our connection!
Different animals can have different names for their noses. A bird has a beak, and muzzle is often used for parts of the head where noses point out, like a dog. A snout is most likely to name a pig's nose, so here is our connection.
  • Question 10

Type the correct answer from the brackets in the box below.

Doctor is to hospital as teacher is to (learn, help, school, homework).

CORRECT ANSWER
School
EDDIE SAYS
Where do you expect a doctor to work? Now think about where you would expect a teacher to work? That will give you your connection!
The other words describe things that you might relate to a teacher, but that wouldn't fit the connection!
Well done, word detective!
