'Practise Writing Longer Sentences' worksheet

Key stage:  KS 1

Year:  Year 1 English worksheets

Curriculum topic:   Writing: Composition

Curriculum subtopic:   Write Sentences

Difficulty level:

Worksheet Overview

sentence is a group of words with a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end.

It also needs to make sense.

duckling

This simple sentence does not make sense:

Yellow the is duckling.

We can change the words to make sure it makes sense.

We also need a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end.

The duckling is yellow.

We can make the sentence more interesting and longer by adding a joining word such as and, so or because.

A longer sentence is often called a compound sentence.

Here, we can use a joining word to join these two short sentences.

The duckling is small.  It is young.

The duckling is small because it is young.

We can also make the sentence more interesting by adding describing words, these are called adjectives.

The duckling is yellow.  The duckling is small.  It is young.

The yellow duckling is small because it is young.

Let's have a go at some questions to practise writing sentences.

You can practise choosing a word to complete a sentence, making sure the sentence makes sense and using capital letters and full stops correctly.

Let's get started!
