Practise Writing Longer Sentences Using Joining Words

A sentence is a group of words with a capital letter at the start and full stop at the end.

It also needs to make sense. 

 

 

This simple sentence does not make sense:

Shell hard a the has tortoise.

 

We can change the words to make sure it makes sense.

We also need a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end.

The tortoise has a hard shell.

 

We can make the sentence more interesting and longer by adding a joining word such as and, so or because.

A longer sentence is often called a compound sentence.

Here, we can use a joining word to join these two short sentences.

 

The tortoise has short legs. The tortoise moves slowly.

The tortoise has short legs so it moves slowly.

 

We can also make the sentence more interesting by adding describing words. These are called adjectives.

 

The tortoise is small.  The tortoise has short legs. The tortoise moves slowly.

The small tortoise has short legs so it moves slowly.
