A sentence is a group of words with a capital letter and full stop and it needs to make sense.
This sentence does not make sense:
Pirates three there are.
We can change the words to make sure it makes sense.
A sentence also needs a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end.
There are three pirates.
We can make it a longer sentence, which is called a compound sentence, by adding a joining word.
Can you see where we added the joining word? The joining word is and.
There are three pirates and they have a ship.
We started with the two simple sentences below and took away the full stop and inserted the joining word and.
There are three pirates. They have a ship.
Let's have a go at some questions to practise writing a sentence.
You can practise choosing a word to complete a sentence, making sure the sentence makes sense and using capital letters and full stops correctly.
