Subordinating conjunctions make our writing more interesting.

We can use words like: although, because, since, to extend our sentences and make our writing more interesting, like this:

 

Although the climb was steep, the view from the top of the hill was worth all the effort.
 

As the hot air balloon floated higher, the world below looked like a miniature toy town.

If you listen closely, you can hear the tiny birds singing in the branches, their voices sweet as bells.

While the sun peeped through the clouds, painting the puddles with gold, the children jumped in, giggling with delight.

 

In these examples, the conjunction is at the beginning of the sentence, so make sure you look there first when we are spotting subordinating conjunctions.

 

In this activity, we will be spotting subordinating conjunctions and clauses - looking for those all-important joining words.
