Root words are words that do not have a prefix (letters which can be added to the beginning of a word) or a suffix (letters which can be added to the end of a word). They are words in their simplest form.
For example: joy, friend and play are all root words.
We can add prefixes or suffixes to root words to change the meaning of words and create 'word families'. 'Word families' are words which all have the same root word.
Prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of words.
In this activity, we are going to look at the suffixes ous and ious. These suffixes change root words to mean full of. For example, mystery becomes mysterious, meaning full of mystery.
When a word ends in 'e', we remove the e and add ous. When the word ends in 'y', we remove the y and add ious.
Let's make a start on the questions now.
